Blocker Utility is collection of services including an anti-spam tool,
up-to-date weather info, an internet toolbar, email backgrounds and
emoticons. On the surface, who could argue with a plugin to Outlook or
Outlook Express that would block spam. Everyone wants less spam in
their inbox, so a utility to block this spam would be essential,
right? Well, with a little more investigation the desire to load or keep this collection of utilities on my computer waned. The company that owns the spamblockerutility.com domain name is none other than the infamous Hotbar.com. I'm not a big fan of Hotbar, they have sent me very nasty letters in the past threatening to sue me because I tell people how to uninstall it if they don't want it. To me Hotbar and Spam Blocker Utility are both annoyanceware programs. Programs that I dont like and dont want on my computer. |
Interestingly enough, half of the pages on Spam Blocker Utility.com refer to the parent company as Zango while the About Us page talks about HotBar. So it appears Hotbar may have purchased Zango. Although its not spyware, you will receive contextually targeted pop ads every once in awhile. Personally, any program that wants to display popups trying to sell me something I dont want on my computer.
If you are really interested in a proven spam blocking program, I would recommend Cloudmark Desktop
How Do I Know If I Have SpamBlockerUtility Installed?
You'll notice the following toolbar in your browser if SpamBlockerUtility is installed on your computer.
as well as the following icons in your system tray
If you run Hijackthis, you'll also notice the following lines that have been added:

You may also notice some extra icons placed on your desktop that appear to be affiliate related links.
How Do I Remove SpamBlockerUtility?
1) Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel
2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs
3) Find "Spam Blocker Utility" in the list of installed programs and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
You'll be presented with the following screen during the uninstall process, you'll want to check either the Browser Toolbar, Toolbar for Microsoft Outlook, WowPapers + Easy Screensavers or all three options before clicking Next to complete the uninstall.
4) Reboot your Computer and run HijackThis
5) With HijackThis, scan for and fix any of the entries shown above that may be remaining.
6) SpamBlockerUtility should now be completely uninstalled from your computer.
7) If for any reason, it did not completely uninstall, click on the following link to download and run the uninstaller from their site.
