TopText (Ezula), Spedia Surf+, Intellitxt
Removal Instructions and Help

What is Toptext ILookup, Spedia Surf+, or Vibrant Media's Intellitxt?
Have you ever viewed a web page and saw a link on it that wasnt quite right? Many times its a yellow underlined link instead of the normal blue hyperlinks. When you click on it, it takes you to a dictionary site, third party site, or something else that you didnt expect. If this has happened to you then your computer is probably infected with something like TopText, Surf+, or Intellitxt. They are products that load into your computer and offer references for specific words on the site. Unfortunately in some cases this means links to a competitors website or product.

TopText created by Ezula is billed as a "premier personal Internet reference and simplification tool that empowers you with an easy way to navigate the Internet and retrieve relevant information with a click of the mouse." Ezula claims to not collect, share or sell any identifiable information about you, however the potential is there. For this reason, I would recommend removing any traces of TopText you find on your system. The potential for misuse is there. TopText has been installed by programs like Kazaa. Top Text infections look like the following:

Spedia Surf+ was a similiar type program to TopText, although it doesnt appear to be in its original form anymore. Now Spedia markets a Surfbar that is designed for "pay for surfing" activities.

Vibrant Media's Intellitxt is different from the spyware of Surf+ or TopText because it doesnt run on a visitors computer. Its actually a new advertising method developed on the TopText idea. Web sites can sign up to put Intellitxt on their sites. Then Vibrant Media will create hyperlinks to important keywords that lead to advertisers sites. A clicked link on a site using Intellitxt would generate revenue for the site owner. This revenue would be paid by the linked advertiser.

According to Vibrant Media's website:

Vibrant Media’s patent-pending IntelliTXT technology highlights commercial text links from keywords appearing within pages of online content. Vibrant Media’s proprietary technology automates the analysis and categorization of content, identifies the most appropriate marketing message to deliver and, when activated by the user, dynamically serves advertising messages to the right user at the right time.

Intellitxt will not serve ads over already hyperlinked content on a page.

Do you have TopText or Surf+ installed on your Computer?

Click on the following link to go to Whirly Wiry Web to check your computer for TopText or Spedia Surf+

Click Here to Detect the Presence of TopText or Spedia Surf+

If you run Hijackthis when you have TopText installed, you'll find the following lines installed. I have posted a tutorial for HijackThis here.

O3 - Toolbar: TopText - {55910916-8B4E-4C1E-9253-CCE296EA71EB} - C:\PROGRA~1\eZula\eabh.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZmmod] C:\PROGRA~1\ezula\mmod.exe

How Do I Remove TopText, Surf+, or Intellitxt ?

Remove TopText

  • Go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
  • Search For TopText, TopText ILookup, HotText, or ContextPro
  • Select it and Choose Remove
  • Restart your computer
  • Search for leftover files and unregister them
Click Start, point to Find or Search, and then click Files or Folders.
Make sure that "Look in" is set to (C:\WINDOWS)
In the "Named" or "Search for..." box, type the following filenames

    stub.exe
    exstub.exe
  • If either of these files are found, follow the directions at Whirly Web to unregister them and delete them
  • Run Hijackthis and remove any other entries concerning TopText such as the following:

    O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [eZstub] Command /c del C:\WINDOWS\system32\eZstub.exe

  • Because TopText leaves some files in the Downloaded Program Files directory along with some miscellaneous registry entries, its a good idea to download and run Spybot Search and Destroy to clean up the leftover files.

Remove Spedia Surf+

Although its not currently active on the web, you can follow the directions at Whirly Web for removing Surf+

Remove Vibrant Media Intellitxt

Since Intellitxt does not run on an individual's computer but rather on the web site itself, there is nothing to uninstall to remove it. The only way to not see these links would be to stop visiting sites using Intellitxt advertising technology. However Intellitxt does offer an optional HTML tag for site owners to allow visitors to their sites to turn Intellitxt ads on or off.
